Exploring Justice Behind Bars: Legal-Eagles.org partners with Books Through Bars in Philadelphia!

Legal Eagles Partner with Books Through Bars

July 2, 2024

In the heart of West Philadelphia, nestled along Baltimore Avenue, sits a beacon of hope and education that has quietly transformed lives for four decades. Books Through Bars, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing reading materials to incarcerated individuals for 30 yrs. This milestone not only marks years of dedicated service but also highlights a new chapter in their journey, thanks to a recent partnership that promises to expand their impact across several states.

Legal Eagles, a renowned advocate for legal education and access, has joined forces with Books Through Bars to enhance their mission. Through this partnership brokered by Legal-Eagles’ President, Ms. Sherry Morrison, an initiative has been launched to distribute free copies of their invaluable resource, Where to Find a Pro Bono Lawyer, to inmates in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Delaware. This comprehensive guide, valued at $99 in print and $3.99 for the PDF version, aims to empower incarcerated individuals by providing critical legal knowledge and assistance.

The partnership was sealed during a meeting between Legal Eagles representatives and Tom, a longtime liaison at Books Through Bars who has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the organization and the community it serves. (Final Approval by the Board and Committees of both organizations is pending.) For Ms. Morrison, this collaboration is not just a gesture of goodwill but a firm commitment to opening doors—doors to education, legal empowerment, and a second chance.

"I've known Tom for years, and his dedication to the mission of Books Through Bars is truly inspiring," Ms. Morrison shared. "At Legal Eagles, we believe that access to legal knowledge is a fundamental right. By providing inmates with practical resources like our guide, we hope to make a meaningful impact on their lives and foster a more just society."

Books Through Bars, which operates out of its West Philadelphia location at 4722 Baltimore Avenue, has been a lifeline for many incarcerated individuals seeking educational materials, ranging from literature to legal texts. The organization relies heavily on volunteers and community support to sustain its operations and expand its reach. This partnership with Legal Eagles represents a significant step forward in their ability to serve more inmates and advocate for broader access to educational resources.

As we celebrate the momentous partnership, this collaboration serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of education and access to information. In the words of Ms. Morrison, "Education is liberation. By empowering individuals with knowledge, we empower them to navigate their legal challenges and build a better future."

For more information on how you can support Books Through Bars or get involved with Legal Eagles' initiatives, visit their respective websites or reach out to their offices. Together, we can continue to write new chapters of hope and justice for those behind bars.

Stay tuned for more updates and stories of impact as this partnership unfolds.
